The Bachelor’s degree in Psychology at UMAIA has over 20 years’ history. It gives students who wish to work as professional psychologists their first level of training. The training follows the requirements of the Portuguese Order of Psychologists (OP) and the recommendations of the European Federation of Psychologists’ Associations contained in the European Qualification Standard for Psychologists. This course provides access to Master’s degree courses in the field of psychology and also mobility within Europe. Foreign students attend our degree course and Portuguese UMAIA students complement their studies at European and Brazilian universities under the ERASMUS+ Programme and the Exchange Programme with Brazil. This course therefore aims to develop students’ basic skills and knowledge in the different areas of psychology (clinical psychology/health, neuropsychology, education, justice, organisations, community, sport).

Professional opportunities

Psychology graduates provide assistance to psychologists by, among other things: running surveys (as interviewers or group monitors); carrying out research (data collection, statistical analysis); providing technical support for industry and services that involve direct interpersonal contact (sales, public relations). A Master’s-level degree is needed to independently practise psychology.

What makes this course different?

The Bachelor’s degree in Psychology offers two timetables: daytime and evenings. The Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES) accredited the course for the maximum time possible in 2013. Teaching is given by teachers who have PhDs and practical work experience in the topics they discuss. They also have significant international research careers and many of them are members of research units recognised by the Foundation for Science and Technology and classified as ‘Excellent’ (Psychology Centre of the University of Porto - CPUP) and ‘Very Good’ (Interdisciplinary Centre for Gender Studies - CIEG). There are many resources available at the university for training and research in psychology: library, library of psychological tests and databases giving access to thousands of scientific journals (b-on, for example); amphitheatre with one-way mirror; psychotherapy research laboratory, etc. The excellence achieved in the field of psychology at UMAIA has led to the accreditation of several Master's programmes in Psychology and a PhD in Clinical Psychology.

Internationalisation

Students may apply for periods of mobility for studies in around 150 higher education institutions of more than 30 countries, as well for international internships, with possibility of financial support.
